A heavy truck, while trying to avoid collision, veered off the road and landed on the car.

An Arab resident died instantly on Friday following a horrific traffic accident in the Azan area of Ras Al Khaimah, while the passenger he was travelling with remains in hospital battling serious injuries.

The deceased man sustained fractures and deep wounds all over his body, and suffered severe internal bleeding as a result of the tragic accident which took place late on Friday evening. Police officials have attributed the accident to dangerous driving.

The other Arab man travelling with him in the same car received grave injuries and was rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment, according to a senior police officer.

Director-General of Central Operations at RAK Police Brigadier Ghanim Ahmed Ghanim, blamed the mishap on the victim, who took a U-turn without first checking if the road was clear.

“Initial investigations showed that a heavy truck driver, accompanied with a workmate, both Asians, was driving in the Azan area in the direction of the Tuwain road when the victim suddenly took the U-turn from the other direction in front of him without checking.”

The heavy truck driver tried hard to avoid a collision, but failed, veered off the road, turned over, and landed on the saloon car, killing the driver and injuring his co-passenger.

Alerted of the accident, the Central Operations Room dispatched traffic, police, ambulance, and a rescue team to the scene, and managed to pull the trapped people to safety using the latest rescue devices.

“The deceased was shifted to the morgue of the hospital for burial by his relatives while his fellow passenger and the two Asian men in the heavy truck were shifted to the hospital for treatment.”

Following the accident, Brig Ghanim warned that taking a U-turn without making sure the road is clear is one of the main reasons behind such accidents and can often lead to gruesome deaths and serious injuries.

“All motorists are urged to abide by traffic rules and regulations to protect the life of road users and theirs,” he said, noting that traffic patrols are deployed on all internal roads and highways of the northern emirate.

Adding, he said 11 people, including eight Emirati nationals, sustained several injuries in a two-car collision on the Etisalat Road of Ras Al Khaimah city on Wednesday around 7:30pm.

“The accident was blamed on speeding and non-compliance with traffic rules.”
