Along with increasing the green areas of the city, the department aims to use the best and most suitable plants available to give a wonderful view for the roads and intersections.

The Dubai Municipality has chalked out an intensive plan to turn the desert city into a garden city by the time millions arrive in Dubai for the Expo 2020.

Senior officials of the Parks and Horticulture Department of the civic body have given a peep into their plans to beautify and add more greenery to Dubai in the build up to host the world’s most important exhibition, just weeks after Dubai won the bid to be the Expo 2020 host city.

Along with increasing the green areas of the city, the department aims to use the best and most suitable plants available to give a wonderful view for the roads and intersections in the city of Dubai in preparation to welcome the prestigious Expo 2020 event.

When tourists, traders and other expo visitors fly down to Dubai from across the world, they will be fittingly greeted with the floral logo of Expo 2020 and welcome notes with plants at various places.

Roadside planting forms another major part of the plan. Taleb Abdul Karim Julfar, the director of Public Parks and Horticulture Department, said the municipality will plant saplings and seedlings on all the arterial roads connecting Dubai with neighbouring emirates and countries. Last month, the department announced that it had already planted 30million seedlings of flowering plants across Dubai this year.

Constructing as many residential parks as possible for leisure and entertainment activities in all parts of the emirate and improving existing parks are other important steps planned. Additionally, he said, innovative and attractive programmes will be organised in public parks to attract and entertain park visitors during the period.

Flowering plants of various hues will be used to beautify the important places and event locations during the World Expo. Julfar announced these plans at a phone-in programme for the public with other senior officials of the department. During the ‘Leaders on Air’ programme, the official also informed about the department’s plans to construct new parks in tune with the population growth and urban development, providing residential parks, play grounds and related services.

Answering queries from the public about the future plans, he said the municipality had already planned to construct nine parks during 2014. They are in Al Lusaili, Al Warqa 2, Al Muhaisnah 3, Al Mazhar 1, Al Twar 2, Al Mankhool, Oud Al Mutina 1, in addition to two play grounds in Al Safa2 and Al Warqa 4. Renovation is in the pipeline for existing parks in Al Lahbab and Al Awir.

Mohammed Abdul Rahman Al Fardan, head of Public Parks Section, Hana Al Zarooni, the head of Guidance and Services Unit and other senior officials of the department attended the phone-in programme, where the team received total 46 calls during two hours from different segments of the society.

Extending sincere thanks to the public for the active participation in the programme giving valuable feedback, suggestions and complaints related to the public and residential parks, Julfar said that constructive suggestions and feedback help to improve the services in accordance with the expectation of the public.

“The department is ready to receive calls from the public round the clock through its toll free number 800900 in addition to this initiative which will be repeated quarterly for the direct interaction with the top officials aimed at knowing the requirements of the public and take necessary actions with immediate effect,” he added.
