JEDDAH: The Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution recently charged three young men in the harassment case at the Jeddah corniche. A number of young men were arrested for harassing two Saudi girls at the corniche a day after Eid Al-Fitr.
A video clip of the case went viral on the social media, triggering outrage over the episode and demands by citizens to arrest the culprits and invoke a stringent law against harassment.
The three have been charged with harassment on the basis of gathering around the girls and causing chaos at a public place, as well as for violating the Shariah law and general morals.
According to the chargesheet, the police station received a report from security patrols containing the identity of one of the youths who appeared in the video, and a security team was dispatched to his home in the Bahrah governorate, from where he was arrested.
The youth admitted to his involvement in the crime, the video of which was shown to him. He also disclosed the identities of two other young men took part in the crime with him.
The Honour and Morals Department completed the investigation, while the Public Prosecutor stressed that the actions of the accused were wrong and should be punished to deter others from indulging in such acts.
The video showed a group of boys harassing the girls by passing comments and even blocking their way. The girls, however, managed to escape from the scene.
