Remembering the ’90s

Nostalgia seems to be in. It was a trend that began when actors Lissy and Suhasini formed the southern film industry’s most elite club, ‘The 80s Stars Reunion’. Stars, who broke new ground in the 1980s, recounted their experiences without inhibition. Similarly, a new group has sprung up, called the ‘Evergreen ’90s’ Club.

This time around, ace filmmaker K.S.Ravikumar, who started his career in 1990 and went on to become a big name in Tamil cinema, initiated ‘The ’90s Stars Reunion’, throwing a party at his house, which was attended by celebrities who made a mark in Tamil cinema of the ’90s and are still active today.

While the ’80s celebs’ union had only actors from the South, the ’90s reunion seemed to comprise technicians, including filmmakers, musicians and cinematographers.
Ravikumar said, “Actually it was Meena along with Sundar C. who first sounded everybody out on the idea. It was an informal gathering at my place with only celebs from K’town.

We relived our old memories. We discussed how to go about organising the first edition of the ’90s reunion. Many more will take place in the coming months. We want to include technicians as well, who created a record in the ’90s from other languages too, namely Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Instead of merely sharing nostalgic moments and unwinding, we are also working out the possibility of taking it to the next level and do something which will also help society.”

A huge cake was also cut to mark the birth of the ‘Evergreen ’90s’ club. We asked how when all the luminaries had come dressed in white — the dress code of the day -— maestro A.R. Rahman was strikingly different in a striped tee, Ravikumar said, “I invited him at the eleventh hour, and that too, through an SMS. I forgot to add the info about the dress code. But he was so enthusiastic that he came.”

Those who were spotted at the do were director Shankar, Venkat Prabhu, Sundar C., Parthiban, Vijay, Suriya with wife Jyothika, Arvind Swamy, Jayaram, Meena, Simran, Roja, Sangeetha among others.
