Muzaffarnagar: Two men on a bike allegedly threw acid at three women teachers and a student in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district yesterday. The four victims are sisters who were returning from school after a board exam when the men allegedly attacked them.
One of them is in a critical condition and may be sent to Delhi for treatment.
“We were coming back from work when two men came on a bike; they had their faces covered and attacked us with acid and ran away,” one of the siblings said.
The police are yet to identify the men on the bike.
Attacks on women have topped the national agenda since December, when a medical student was assaulted and raped, allegedly by six men, on a moving bus in Delhi. She died two weeks later of severe injuries inflicted on her during an attack so vicious that it stunned the doctors who attended to her.
Seething with anger and grief, students led protests in the capital and other cities, forcing the government to introduce tough new laws to punish sexual crimes against women.
The new anti-rape bill was passed in Parliament last month. The house had voted against life imprisonment for acid attack. The revised laws also recognize voyeurism and stalking as criminal offences, and controversially provide death penalty for rapes which leave the victim dead or in a coma.
