Manipal University mulling on sports academy, course in sports

MANIPAL: Manipal University (MU) will soon start a high performance sports academy on its campus in collaboration with a similar academy in South Africa.

While talking about Gary Kirsten’s visit to the campus,

GK Prabhu, registrar of the varsity, said that the deemed university has plans to collaborate with a sports academy in Cape Town, South Africa to start a certificate or degree course in sports. “We have the necessary infrastructure to start courses in sports. We have started taking opinions from experts in the field in this regard. On Thursday, former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten paid a visit to the university campus and gave their opinions,” he said.

The university’s sports infrastructure includes a cricket ground, swimming pool and Marena, an international standard indoor stadium equipped with tennis, badminton, synthetic track, among others.

“We conducted an informal survey. We have been getting enquiries from physiotherapists and orthopedicians, who treat injured sports persons, about courses in sports,” he added. have been as.

Meanwhile, the university in collaboration with University of Auckland, New Zealand has started an MSc in exercise and sports science, a dual degree programme, from this academic year.

Those, who have UG degrees in physiotherapy, occupational therapy and exercise or sports science, are eligible to apply for the course. “After completing their first year in the university, the students will go to University of Auckland to complete their course. After completion of the course, they can build their career as sports scientists or exercise physiologist,” he added.
