NEW DELHI: In a major breakthrough, Delhi Police crime branch has arrested one of the top aids of underworld don Ejaz Lakdawala, one of the most wanted men in the files of the Indian police forces, in Delhi.
The suspect identified as Mohammad Yusuf alias Miyan was given the contract to eliminate two businessmen of Mumbai and one from Delhi.
He had hired Punjab based shooters to execute the task.
Yusuf belongs to Bareily in UP and had been handling Delhi, UP and Punjab operations for Lakdawala. His job involved extortion and assassination of those who refused.
When contacted, joint CP (crime) Ravindra Yadav confirmed the arrest.
A team led by additional commissioner (crime) Ashok Chand and ACP KPS Malhotra had been tracking Yusuf after inputs received at crime branch indicated that a sensational assassination bid, being masterminded by the underworld, was in the making.
DCP Bhisham Singh’s team produced Yusuf at Rohini Courts and obtained his remand. He is being quizzed for further targets.
Lakdawala belongs to Mumbai. His character was played by Vivek Oberoi in the movie ‘Company’. He was an associate of Dawood Ibrahim but letter fell out over dispute.
In May 2003, he was rumored to have been killed when Dawood’s gang members, irked by his alliance with rival Chota Rajan, opened fire at him in a crowded market in Bangkok.
However, he survived and moved to Canada. In May 2004, he was arrested by the Canadian Police in Ottawa. He had an Interpol red corner notice against him.
