If you perform in the IPL, you get what you deserve, says Dinesh Karthik, who was bought by Delhi for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore

Like previous editions, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Player Auction in Bangalore on Wednesday had its fair share of surprises. But some decisions also left everyone baffled.

Dinesh Karthik raised a few eyebrows when he went for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore to Delhi Daredevils. Although his IPL exploits are well publicised, Delhi defied all logic when it shelled that amount on Karthik who is hardly close to making a comeback into the Indian team at the moment.

He last played an international match in August 2013. His last T20 international was over three years ago (in 2010 against Sri Lanka). Karthik was in the probables list for next month’s ICC World T20, but was not considered in the final squad. He was also left out of the upcoming Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Karthik however, said one cannot compare IPL with the current lot of Indian team players. “I think it is very wrong to compare the IPL with the current Indian T20 team. If you see the Indian T20 team, out of the top seven that are playing, six of them have been retained.

It just shows that the team has a batting unit that is very strong. There are bound to be players who are going to be missing out and I am one of them. I wish the team good luck, and it is all up to the selectors and what they think is the best for Team India at the moment,” said Karthik after a practice session with India Cements on the eve of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Corporate Trophy at the Bandra Kurla Complex ground on Saturday.

Karthik, who had a fruitful season with the Mumbai Indians in the last IPL, scoring 510 in 19 matches, said rewards will come if there is performance in IPL. “If you see, a lot of the domestic Indian players have earned far more than some international players.

It just goes to show that if you perform in the IPL, you will be getting what you deserve irrespective of whether you are an uncapped player or a capped player or international player. It is about what you can bring to the table,” he explained.

Keen to play under Kirsten
Karthik, meanwhile, is keen to work with former India coach Gary Kirsten. He said the team would benefit from Kirsten’s calmness. “Everybody knows him as a wonderful human being and his track record has been phenomenal. It is going to be wonderful to be working with a person like him. You require a calm head in T20, and he will definitely bring that to the table,” he signed off.
