Saurashtra came into the game needing a bonus point to have any chance of qualifying. That remained a distinct possibility at stumps on the first day. Services chose to bat and were bowled out for 72 in only 21.4 overs. Only two of their batsmen got into double figures and nine of them fell to spin. Between them, offspinner Kamlesh Makvana and left-arm spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja took nine wickets in 13.4 overs.

Saurashtra’s openers, Chirag Pathak and Sagar Jogiyani, overhauled Services’ total themselves before Services fought their way back through a pair of part-timers. Medium-pacer Yashpal Singh took five wickets and offspinner Rajat Paliwal three as Saurashtra, who were 80 for no loss at one point, finished the day 176 for nine. It might have been less if not for a 52 from their No. 3 Sheldon Jackson, and his partnership of 43 with Makvana for the sixth wicket.

Tamil Nadu 66 for 6 (Lahiri 2-27, Saxena 2-21) trail Bengal 130 (Shah 4-65, Rangarajan 6-30) by 64 runs

Sixteen wickets fell at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, and all of them fell to spin. Neither side would have complained; both were locked on the same number of points, and both needed to win outright to have any chance of making the quarterfinals.

Bengal batted first and were all out for 130, with offspinner Malolan Rangarajan taking his second five-wicket haul of the season and left-arm spinner Rahil Shah picking up four wickets. Subhomoy Das and Sudip Chatterjee, Bengal’s No. 3 and No. 4, made 30s, but the rest came and went in a hurry. Bengal lost their last seven wickets for 46 runs.

Tamil Nadu did no better in reply. The teams had seemed just about even as the day drew to a close, before Bengal struck twice in the last two overs to leave the hosts 66 for 6.

Railways 301 for 4 (Ghosh 89*, Rawat 83*) v Uttar Pradesh

Railways had already booked a quarterfinal spot but were in no mood to do Uttar Pradesh any favours. They lost debutant Abhishek Kaushik early, but denied UP quick wickets thereafter. Shivakant Shukla, Nitin Bhille and Rongsen Jonathan all got starts, without any of them going past 45, before Arindam Ghosh and Mahesh Rawat showed them how to, after coming together at 166 for 4.

Ghosh and Rawat were still at the crease at stumps, having extended their partnership to an unbroken 135. Ghosh was batting on 89, having faced 164 balls and struck 12 fours, while wicketkeeper Rawat was on an 88-ball 83, and had struck 14 fours and two sixes.
