New Delhi: The Indian Army said on Tuesday that it engaged two groups of militants on the Indo-Myanmar border and inflicted “significant damage”, in response to the killing of 18 soldiers in Manipur last week. India and Myanmar launched a joint operation against the militants, according to reports. It is also learnt that special operation troops have gone across the border and militants suffered big casualties.
“Significant casualties have been inflicted on the militants,” says Major Gen Randhir Singh. “Any threat to our safety, security and national integrity will meet with a firm response,” he added.
Earlier, militants ambushed a military convoy in Manipur’s Chandel district last Thursday, killing 18 soldiers in the deadliest single attack on Army soldiers in several years.
The militants used landmines, rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons to execute the ambush. Eleven armymen were injured.
Army and civilian authorities in Manipur suspect the involvement of Manipur rebel outfit People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), a Manipur-based militant organisation.
