Bangalore, (DHNS): Police have arrested a man on the charge of raping a 20-year-old newly married woman. The victim, in a complaint to the police, alleged that the suspect, her brother’s friend, had taken her to Tirupati where he raped her.

But the police said the victim had been in a relationship with the suspect and did not appear to have discontinued it even after her marriage.

The victim, who works as a maid in Mahadevapura, stated that on July 14, the suspect Shivaraj Kumar, a resident of Kundalahalli Gate, took her to Tirupati saying that her mother had taken ill.

They stayed there for four days in a room before returning to his village in Mulbagal taluk.

The victim stayed at Kumar’s house for some days.

The police said that the victim’s mother stayed at Varthur and it was not clear why the former went with Kumar to Tirupati and Mulbagal. According to the police, the suspect and the victim returned to Bangalore on Tuesday when Kumar deserted her after taking her to a nearby hospital for checkup.

The same day, she approached the police and lodged a complaint of rape. It later emerged that the victim had got married about two months ago.

The suspect used to stay at the victim’s house before her marriage.

“The case appears to be tricky as the suspect was staying in the victim’s house and both had placed the marriage proposal before their parents, but the families opposed it.

The victim later got married to another man but does not appear to have discontinued her relationship with the suspect,” a senior officer said. A case of rape has been registered at the Mahadevapura police station.
