Hubli, Jun 15: The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H K Patil has stated that a target of creating two lakh jobs under Rajiv Gandhi Chaitanya Scheme had been set and the chief minister had sanctioned Rs 109 crore for the project.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said: “Forty unemployed youths will be selected from each Gram Panchayat and two-day training will be given to them. The first phase of selecting the beneficiaries for the scheme is over.”
The minister said his ministry had taken steps to train one lakh people in dairy farming and agriculture-based activities as part of self-employment. Training will be imparted to another one lakh people in different vocations and efforts will be made to get them skill-based jobs.
He said that last year there was a target of constructing six lakh toilets, of which 5.05 lakh toilets have been constructed.
Of the 1,000 pure drinking water units, 800 units were ready. Energising two borewells at each GP would be taken up under MGNREGS.
The government, with an aim to make the Panchayat Raj system more relevant and transparent, had set up a committee headed by former speaker Ramesh Kumar to bring ammendments to the Panchayat Raj Act.
The committee had been consulting the stakeholders and it may submit its report in two to three months. The amendments to the Act was likely to be brought by October, he added.
Patil said the government was contemplating setting up a rural university to promote research and technology in rural development. A committee set up in this regard will submit its report soon, he added.
