Mangalore International Airport records 52 kg gold smuggling in 3 years

Mangalore, Aug 14: In the last three years, the number of passengers smuggling gold from Dubai to Mangalore Airport have been increased.

A total of 62 cases of illegal gold smuggling have been registered at Mangalore Airport in these years, seizing around 51,758.610 kg gold worth Rs 14, 96, 32, 607 from the smugglers possession.

The incident of gold smuggling at Airport came into light from November 2012. In these three years the DRI and Custom officials have been conducting raid separately and seize the illegal gold smuggling.

According to the officials, the raid of gold smuggling at Airport is just 10 percent, whereas 90 percent of the gold smuggle go unnoticed.

On June 15, the DRI officials have seized gold worth Rs 30 lakhs and the involvement of cleaning department of the Airport is clearly mentioned. This is one of the instance and ability of smugglers, who get gold out of Airport in any possible way.

In order to control the gold smuggling, the DRI officials and Excise officials conduct inspection separately. The excise department conducts the raid and find out the gold being hidden in passengers goods, while the DRI officials conducts raid after getting the information about the passenger carrying gold and the source he choose to smuggle it.

The DRI officials, in the last three years have identified 11 cases and seized 21 kg gold worth Rs 5.786 and the custom officials identified 51 cases and seized 30.6 kg gold worth Rs 9.176.

According to Airport security personnel’s, around 150 passengers travel in plane everyday and checking everyone is not possible, hence only 10 percent of cases have been identified.

Custom Officials raid: Till July 2014, the Custom officials identified a total of 32 cases and seized 18.866 kg gold worth Rs 5.64 crore and arrested 11 passengers. In 2013, the 19 cases were identified, seized 11.744 kg gold worth Rs 3.54 crore and arrested four persons in this regard.

DRI officials raid: In 2014, DRI officials caught four cases based on information and seized 8,903.240 gram gold worth Rs 2,43, 08, 259, while in 2013, around 4840.740 gram gold worth Rs 1.21 crore have been seized.

Tax evasion: As per the rule,  In 2012 each person coming from Dubai to Mangalore had an opportunity to carry 5 kg gold, but based on the present global financial inclusion each person must reside in Dubai for a period of six months and can carry one kg gold. If they have to carry more gold then they need to pay the tax to the government, hence such smuggling take place frequently.
