Mangalore, Feb 18: Minister for Kannada and Culture and Women and Child Welfare Umashree inaugurated a two-day Veerarani Abbakka Utsava at Mudipu on Feb 17, Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, she said that Abbakka was the one who allowed pleasant living of people in Tulunadu, having people speaking Konkani, Tulu, Beary and Kannada languages. People should continue to live in harmony in the district.
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the reception committee of the festival and former MLA K. Jayarama Shetty said that government must establish Abbakka Study Chair at Mangalore University to document the freedom struggle of the warrior. The lesson of Abbakka must be introduced in school syllabus, he added.
The organizing committee put forth various demands including naming Mangalore International Airport after Abbakka.
Artistes of Nritya Lahari Natyalaya of Mudipu presented Rani Abbakka ‘geetha nritya’ (skit) on the occasion.
Renowned singer Puttur Narasimha Nayak and party presented the light music, while women artistes of Gopalakrishna Mahila Yakshagana Sangha presented Yakshagana titled ‘Jambavathi Kalyana’.
The procession comprised various teams such as keelu kudure, karaga kunita, dollu kunita, dudi kunita, huli vesha, daff, chennu kunita, halakki kunita and other.
