Vaibhavi, Austin, Varun, Devashree win Konkani poetry writing contest

Mangalore : Kavita Trust, which works for the promotion of Konkani poetry has declared the results of the Late Charles and Theresa Rodrigues Memorial VII All India Konkani Poetry Competition.

While Vaibhavi Bhalchandra Gawas, 8th grade student of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Sattari, Goa has won the first prize of Rs 2000, Austin D’Cunha, 6th grade student of LourdesCentralSchool, Mangalore has won the second prize of Rs 1000.

Varun D’Souza, 6th grade student of St Aloysius Higher Primary School, Mangalore and Devashree Kamath, 9th grade student of MaryImmaculateGirlsHigh School, Taleigao, Goa are the joint third prize winners. They will each get Rs 500 in cash.  All the winners are entitled for a memento and a certificate.

A total of 172 poems were received for this year’s competition. Averyl Rodrigues, Vitori Karkal and Melvyn Rodrigues after going through all the poems selected the winners.

Vaibhavi’s poem (‘The Mountain that has Stood Straight’) dwells on the Goan environmental issue.  Austin’s poem talks about peace in the daily lives of humans. Varun’s poem is about all the good things rains do and Devashree creates a chocolate world through her poem.

The prizes will be given during Kavita Fest 2014 which will be held in Mangalore on January 12 at Town Hall. Kannada writer Vivek Shanbhogue will inaugurate the festival in the morning and Rahamat Tarikere, Kannada critic will be the chief guest for the evening programme.  Basti Vaman Shenoy, Rohan Monteiro and Lavita Monteiro will be the guests for the programme.
