Karkala; Sept 16: In much excitement filled and heavily fought presidential election of Karkala Municipal Corporation, the congress which is already in power has once again bounced back to the power with thin margin. It was reported that there was a tough tussle and neck to neck contest in the election.
Smt Rahamath from Kaabettu Cholpady,ward No 23,has been elected as the first Muslim President of Karkala Municipal corporation.Smt Rahamat has created a history by becoming the first Muslim president from the minority community.
As the name of the winner has been announced party workers started celebrating the victory by busting crackers and distributing sweets.The victorious candidates have been taken in procession in an open vehicle along with other women supporters.
Morning 10.30 am Karkala tahsildar Babu Devadiga participated as an election officer. While Rahamat from congress submitting the nomination and from BJP Lalitha R Bhat has submitted her nomination for president.On the basis of reservation Smt Shashikala from BJP has been unanimously elected as the vice president of the Karkala Municipal Corporation.
In the presidential election, Jayaprakash Hegde, Loka Sabha MP, V Sunil Kumar, MLA and including 23 municipal corporation members, a total of 25 votes have been casted. Out of these 25 votes, congress has bagged 13 votes and BJP has won 12votes and by raising the hands by everybody election process has been organzed.
Jayapraksh Hegde, MP Lok Sabha said in his address in the first cabinet meeting headed by newly elected president Smt Rahamat, said that here winning or losing is not an important issue but complete development of the Karkala city is the responsibility of all the 23 members. In the days to come, we have to forget our party criteria and work unitedly, collectively for the overall progress of the city and congratulated newly elected president and vice president.
Addressing the gathering, Sunil Kumar MLA said in his address that in order to keep the Karkala city beautiful and clean, we all, will have to work collectively mainly the work of drainage and roads on priority basis. For the overall development of Karkala, I have already put a word with Government for the sanction of Rs 30 crore and further added that I always try to work with corporation for the complete development of Karkala city, he added.
Shashikala Rane, vice president, Babu Devadiga, Tahsildar, Gopalkrishna Shetty, MD, Municipal Corporation and all the corporation members were present.
