Minor irrigation sources 5th census in September: DC A B Ibrahim

Mangaluru, August 18:  The fifth census of the minor irrigation project will be undertaken in the state, informed Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim.

DC chaired a meeting in his office with the officials of the minor irrigation department on Monday, August 17th. The census will be done in September and is very important as the information gathered in this census will be used to chalkout the future projects. All the concerned officials have to work in co-ordination for the success of this census in an accurate and orderly manner. Farmers, public’s and the organizations have to co-operate and make the census successful, requested the Deputy Commissioner.

Minor irrigation project engineer D R Ramachandra explained in the meeting that the projects till four hectares come under the taluk panchayats while the projects till forty hectares come under zilla panchayats and the projects from 40-2000 hectares come under the minor irrigation. Apart from this, the census will also be done of the minor irrigation projects managed individually by the farmers, by the co-operative societies, the farmers association and others. Mainly the minor irrigation projects have been bifurcated into ground water projects and surface water projects.  The ground water project is bifurcated into, open wells and bore wells with small, medium and deep depths.  The surface water project is bifurcated into surface flowing water projects and lift irrigation projects, he explained.

The village accountants have to undertake the census work in each village by inspecting the minor irrigation projects. After the village census work is completed, the Tashildhar and statistical inspectors will supervise the census work and projects of about 10% or maximum of 300 projects will be chosen and inspected, he explained.

At the district level, District statistician /Assistant director have to chose 10% of the projects from minimum of five villages whose census has been done falling under their jurisdiction, and personally supervise the census quality and also the jurisdiction, informed Ramachanda.

It has been decided to hold a workshop on the census within the end of this month in each taluk for the village accountants and the concerned officials, he informed in the meeting.
