Mangaluru, August 18: After a youth suffering from a kidney ailment passed away, the angry relatives and locals protested at the premises of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital in Deralakatte here on the night of Monday August 17th. It is also alleged that the angry mob assaulted the doctors.
The deceased youth is Mohammed Faizal (24), a resident of Beeri in Kotekar.
Mohammed Faizal was employed in Gulf, but as he started suffering from a kidney ailment, about four months ago, he returned to his hometown. He was admitted to Yenepoya hospital in Deralakatte where he was advised to undergo dialysis. Accordingly, regularly he was undergoing dialysis from sometime. On Monday evening, Faizal’s health deteriorated suddenly and Dr Roshan who examined him asked the youth’s family to arrange blood. In the evening, his relatives donated four units of blood. But, by 9 pm his condition worsened and he breathed his last. His parents were informed about his death over the phone.
Faizal’s parents rushed to the ICU of the hospital, but Dr Roshan was not available. His assistant Dr Prashant reportedly told them that they could get information about their son soon after Dr Roshan was back. It is alleged that though the parents insisted on seeing their son, they were denied permission, it is learnt.
After the news spread, Faizal’s relatives and locals gathered at the hospital and expressed rage at the doctors. It is alleged that, they assaulted the doctors and the nursing staff and also damaged the hospital property.
The doctors at the hospital said that Faizal was undergoing dialysis regularly but on Monday evening his condition deteriorated. Four units of blood were then obtained from his relatives, out of which two units were transfused, while two went unused. In such cases, blood has to be transfused within a certain time, because of which two units were left unused, but the relatives of the patient misunderstood it, they said.
Ullal police rushed at the spot and took the situation under control.
