Water problem continues even on 5th day in Mangaluru: publics suffer without water supply, private tankers charge double fares

Mangaluru, August 05: As the main water supply pipe that passes through Kannur here burst, water supply to the city has been affected and has continued even on the 5th day. The publics in various parts of the city suffered a lot without water.

On Tuesday morning, the city dwellers were found to be drawing water from the wells of their neighbours. People waited in long queues to fill water from the tankers. In the afternoon, water was supplied in the areas such as Balmata, Kankanady and few other places while there was no water supply in Morgans gate, Bendorewell, Ujjodi, Bajal and other areas till evening and the people were seen struggling for water.

From the past two days, the situation had prevailed that the hotels, and flats ordered water from private water tankers by paying double fares. Some were seen collecting rain water in vessels and barrels for use.

There were some situations where the family members applied leave for their work and began collecting water. The children’s too in some areas had to stay back at homes as there was no water to clean their uniforms, informed some parents.

In some areas although there was well, the people switched to use the water supplied by MCC. But now they had begun to draw water from their wells.

One of the resident in Mangaladevi area had bought a rope to draw water from the well. But since yesterday, he has begun to use it to draw water from the well, he informed the media.

Pump on rent:

Some residents in Morgans gate area bought a pump on rent for Rs 700 a day and pumped water from public well to as many as 15 houses in the area.

Water supply from today, assures DC:

A pipeline was repaired yesterday night and water was supplied to some areas of the city, another pipe would be repaired within midnight of Tuesday and from today, water will be supplied to the city as usual, assured the Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim.

The Deputy Commissioner who had visited Kannur, and inspected the spot where the pipe was damaged said, the concerned officials have been directed to conduct a survey at the spots across the city where there are leakages in pipeline, construction debris, and soil dumped over the pipelines to avoid such incidents in future.
