Monitoring situation, says Rajnath

With the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh worsening, and two policemen being gunned down in Firozabad, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that he was “closely monitoring the situation” in the State. The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party also piled up pressure on the Samajwadi Party government, demanding imposition of President’s Rule.

The killings in Firozabad, which is represented in the Lok Sabha by Akshay Yadav, nephew of Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh, not only left the State Government dazed, but also spawned violent reaction from the kin of the deceased policemen and the villagers of Sailai Puliya and Nagla Bari.

Firozabad is without an SP and the district is manned by an officer of the rank of Additional SP.

The DIG of Agra Range, Vijay Singh Meena, sustained head injuries in the heavy stone pelting by the angry villagers on Monday, who were demanding the arrest of the culprits and the suspension of the station in charge of Ramgarh police station. Four stitches were applied to the DIG, the State IG (Law and Order), Amrendra Kumar Sengar said in Lucknow.

The national highway 2 was blocked for several hours at Subhash trisection in Firozabad resulting in traffic chaos.

The policemen were outnumbered

The two policemen, who were gunned down in Firozabad early on Monday morning, had found themselves hopelessly outnumbered by the criminals.

The constables were on night patrol duty on their motorcycle when they received information that criminals were moving from Nagla Bari to Sailai Pulia. On reaching Nagla Bari, under the Ramgarh police station area, at around 1.30 am on Monday, they suddenly came under fire from the criminals. The policemen returned the fire, but were out numbered. While constable Giriraj Kishore died on the spot, Dinesh Pratap Singh died on way to Agra where he was taken for treatment, Mr. Sengar said. The assailants fled under the cover of darkness

A case has been registered at the Ramgarh police station under Sections 147,148,149, 302 and 34 of IPC and Section 7 of Criminal Law Amendment Act. While Rs. 10 lakh has been sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund to the next of the kin of each of the deceased, another Rs. 10 lakh each has been given to the cops’ kin by the DG Police.

In the last few weeks, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a spike in crimes against women and political violence. The BJP was at the receiving end of the political violence: in the last ten days, three of its leaders were killed, and about half a dozen others survived attacks on them. A Congress leader and his driver were killed in Amethi on Saturday, allegedly by those allied with the SP.

The national highway 2 was blocked for several hours at the Subhash trisection in Firozabad, resulting in chaos. The blockade was lifted following the intervention of the IG of Agra Zone, Mr. Sengar said.
