New Delhi: A 35-year-old scrap dealer was killed when two unidentified assailants on a white scooty pumped six bullets into him on a busy road near the Inderlok metro station in north-west Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

The scrap dealer was driving his new red i20 car with his friend’s wife, mother and three children when the assailants opened indiscriminate fire at about 2.15 pm near a traffic signal. Police suspect personal or business rivalry behind the attack.

His friend’s wife, who was seated on the front passenger seat, received a gunshot wound after a bullet grazed past her right arm. While the scrap dealer, Sunder Chauhan, died on the spot, the woman, Baby, was taken to a nearby hospital from where she was discharged after preliminary medical attention.

The indiscriminate firing created panic among commuters who started running in different directions. Some of them even ran after the assailants to overpower them. But the attackers fired a couple of more rounds in the air to scare them and managed to escape.

Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police (north), said Chauhan was returning from the Tis Hazari Courts where he along with the woman, her three children and mother-in-law had gone to meet her husband Golu, arrested in an attempt-to-murder case.

Golu had allegedly run over a traffic constable last year in west Delhi and a case was registered against him at the Mianwali police station.

“Chauhan and Golu’s family members left the court at 1.45pm in his i20 car. They had reached the Inderlok Metro station when two men on a scooty waylaid the car and opened fire on Chauhan. He received six bullets and died on the spot. Baby is out of danger,” said Verma.

The police were informed about the incident by a local. The injured victims were rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where Chauhan was declared brought dead, police said.

A case of murder, attempt to murder and under the arms act has been registered at the Sarai Rohilla police station. Chauhan received bullet shots on his head, chest and twice on his neck , police sources said.

“We have some leads in the case on which our teams are working. The footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area are being examined to establish the identity of the attackers,” Verma said.
